Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer’s passion for Africa started in the mid-90s when she moved to Zimbabwe with Jonathan Oppenheimer. By 1999, they had settled in South Africa, which she embraced as her home. Initially focusing on health and education in her philanthropic endeavours, Jennifer’s interests later shifted towards environmental conservation as she became more aware of the region’s and the world’s challenges. Sustainable ecology became a key theme in her efforts to create a harmonious environment where humans and nature can coexist for generations.
Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant 2024 Details
- A grant of $150,000 will be awarded to one successful applicant to support a research project or program lasting up to three years. Previously funded research projects are not eligible for consideration.
Eligibility Criteria
The lead applicant should:
- Be an early-career scientist with a PhD degree and no more than seven years of post-degree work or research experience (excluding family responsibilities).
- Have strong affiliations with a credible African institution capable of managing funds and adhering to good financial grant practices. Eligible institutions include academic institutions, research institutions, government entities, NGOs, and for-profit organizations.
- Focus the proposed research on or within Africa, specifically addressing biodiversity and conservation.
Judging Criteria
They are interested in projects that:
- Advances knowledge in their field.
- Provide solutions to African challenges that are scalable and applicable across multiple regions.
- Demonstrate innovative methodologies and scientific excellence.
- Contribute to human capital development by mentoring and supporting the next generation of researchers.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaborations and leverage resources effectively.
- Create lasting impact beyond the grant period.
