    The Humanitarian Reporting Fellowship Opportunity is a six-month program designed to empower journalists from the Global South. The fellowship is a unique opportunity for any locally-focused journalist to improve their skills in reporting, framing, and presenting local stories to global audiences within The New Humanitarian’s global newsroom.

    Humanitarian Reporting Fellowship Opportunity

    As a Fellow, you will go into multimedia reporting techniques and create reporting formats that authentically reflect and represent their communities. They are looking for one fellow to join us full-time, and the successful candidate will receive a competitive stipend.

    For nearly three decades, The New Humanitarian has been dedicated to delivering quality, independent journalism in service of millions affected by humanitarian crises worldwide. We report from the frontlines of conflicts and disasters to inform prevention and response efforts.

    This fellowship aligns with TNH’s commitment to journalism and provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, government officials, and others invested in improving lives during crises.

    Key responsibilities and benefits for the successful candidate

    • Full participation in TNH’s global reporting and presentation process, contributing original work across platforms.
    • Support for individual reporting, collaborating with TNH newsroom journalists to develop innovative formats grounded in the fellow’s background.
    • Access to travel and production resources for reporting on humanitarian issues in their local community.

    Benefits of The Humanitarian Reporting Fellowship Opportunity

    • You will be paid $30,000 monthly plus travel and expenses

    Eligibility Criteria

    The successful candidate must:

    • Be a citizen of a country in the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, or Africa.
    • Be available to work primarily during West Africa Standard Time (Central European Time).
    • Be a journalist based in their home country with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
    • Demonstrate a keen interest in humanitarian issues and their coverage.
    • Have reliable internet access and the ability to work in a diverse newsroom setting.
    • Possesses strong English communication skills.
    • Commit to attending the full duration of the program.

    The program welcomes applications from both freelance and employed journalists. Employed applicants must provide a letter from their employers granting them a leave of absence for the fellowship’s duration.

    Interested candidates should submit:

    • A CV or detailed professional experience list.
    • A personal statement/cover letter (max 500 words) outlining their motivation, interest in humanitarian journalism, and how they plan to utilize the fellowship’s knowledge.
    • For employed journalists: A note from their employer affirming willingness to grant a leave of absence.

    Due to system constraints, you can upload only two documents. Therefore, employed candidates needing to include an employer’s note should merge it with their statement as one document.
